Call me naïve, but when I was a girl-watching James Bond and devouring Harriet the Spy-all I wanted was to grow up to be a spy. Unlike most kids, I didn't lose my secret-agent aspirations. So as a bright-eyed, idealistic college grad, I sent my resume to the CIA.Getting in was a story in itself. I peed in more cups than you could imagine, and was nearly condemned as a sexual deviant by the staff psychologist. My roommates were getting freaked out by government investigators lurking around, asking questions about my past.Finally, the CIA was training me to crash cars into barriers at 60 mph. Jump out of airplanes with cargo attached to my body. Survive interrogation, travel in alias, lose a tail. One thing they didn't teach us was how to date a guy while lying to him about what you do for a living. That I had to figure out for myself. Then I was posted overseas. And that's when the real fun began.

This narrative might be useful to someone researching CIA training for another piece of writing. The author is articulate and intelligent. I agree with her expressed disillusionment over the Iran situation. This she says was the last straw, the one that caused her to leave the agency, which she characterizes as inept and money wasting. I looked forward to the book partly because I'm related to someone who most likely works for the CIA. I'll never know from this family person what the job is like and I wanted insight, but somehow I found myself just skimming: reading the first sentence of very other graph hoping to become engaged.The problem for me is largely that I could not feel empathy for the author. She pretends to mock her failures; yet every anecdote is about her superiority physically and intellectually. (There's way too much rock climbing, without ever giving the reader an actual sense of the experience.) She comes across as "entitled" and narcissistic. Her two girlfriends who make frequent appearances as self indulgent, empty-headed party goers seem to be there to frame the writer's superiority in being able to party like one of them and be a hard working spy as well. I suspect that the friends may be composites -- so little distinguishes them from each other or from any generic rich, world-traveling, beautiful, drug-taking, boozing, enticer of the "Balkan Frank Sinatra," party hound. The writer attributes feelings and experiences to them, as she does to herself, but they seem shallow indeed. Even the parties and occasional castles are without zing. I would contrast these empty personas with similarly self-indulgent but entertaining and memorable characters in "Crazy Rich Asians."Obviously, I was not engaged; however, the author seems to feel she can turn on the charm. Maybe it'll work on you. By her own account, she rarely fails.
